The town has surgeries for doctor, dentist and vet, a parish church, Roman Catholic church and chapel, a primary school, pre school and Montessori. It is surrounded by countryside, riverside and moorland walks and has good sports facilities with a football and cricket pitch with a pavilion, a bowling club, tennis club, a skate park and children's play park and an open air swimming pool in the summertime. The A30 dual carriageway is approximately 5 miles away and Exeter is approximately 20 miles.

From Fowlers front doors turn left and go to the top of The Square. Turn left into High Street and pass The Three Crowns and just next to The Green Man Vegan cafe take The Drang (alleyway). The second doorway up The Drang on the left is Fox Hat cottage.
